In India, it is mandatory for certified jewelers to sell or manufacture jewellery and artifacts. The BIS certified jewellery mark is required from registered Assay and Hallmarking centers under the Bureau of Indian Standards. Hallmarking ensures purity and fineness, with Fine Gold 999, Standard Gold 995, and gold alloys for jewellery and artifacts. The hallmarking of gold jewellery and artifacts now incorporates a six-digit alphanumeric code (AB13CD) along with the three marks marked as 22K916, 18K750, and 14K585.

For instance, 22K916 signifies that the jewellery is made of 22-carat gold, indicating it contains 91.6 percent pure gold.
